A controversial 'traditional marriage' design gains legislative approval despite criticism.

RICHMOND -- A bill to create a "traditional marriage" specialty license plate cleared a House committee Tuesday over objections from gay and lesbian lobbyists and some lawmakers who think it's a bad idea.
"To me, the issue trivializes marriage," said Del. Albert C. Pollard Jr., D-Lancaster. "Is that where we want to promote marriage, the same place where we put beekeepers, bowlers and parrotheads?"
That said, Pollard voted for the measure, not willing to anger constituents in an election year. The entire 100-seat House is up for re-election in November. He said he could visualize television attack ads on the issue being aired against delegates who appear to vote against marriage.
"Truth very seldom gets in the way in political advertising," he said.
The bill, sponsored by Del. L. Scott Lingamfelter, R-Prince William, now goes to the full House for consideration. The measure would allow drivers to pay a little more to have their license plate read "traditional marriage," and be adorned with a small emblem of entwined wedding rings.
Lingamfelter said the plate isn't a political statement, and that he had "political neutrality in mind" when he wrote the bill authorizing the plate.

"Not content with the national-ID regime put in to law in the so-called 9/11 intelligence reform bill, House Judiciary Chairman James Sensenbrenner has introduced a bill that would implement his own private Orwell.
The current bill sets up a "rulemaking" commission compromised of the Transportation Department, Homeland Security, state governors, and state departments of motor vehicles. The commission will draw up the rules for turning driver's licenses into de facto national ID cards over the next nine (now eight) months and finalize them in 18 (17) months."
