My new job in sunny California.
I have been hired as an independent contractor for Myspace to help with all of their constant issues and poor design choices.
Yes, I know I'll be working for Rupert Murdoch, but it's not like I'm ever going to see him, just his money. As long as I don't have to support Fox News I'll be happy.
There are several things I want to do with my new job. Here's a few examples of what Tom and I have discussed and agreed to:
- Completely redesign the user interface. The new design will not look like it was hacked together.
- Finish all of features introduced before making them available (example: the new image galleries)
- Change the name of "Bulletins" to "Friend Spam" (this might be bad P.R. though, but Tom got a laugh when I suggested this)
- Make the search engine actually works instead of making it pretend like it works
- Inviting users to an event will be easier for humans and harder for girls with nude videos you just have to check out.
- Give users the option to convert account types (was formerly available, then myspace changed one little thing in other code and couldn't make the time to change that too)
- Create RSS, Atom, and XHTML feed types for all data on myspace. I will also make viewing larger images and links like "add to friends" and "send a message" simply load the the content on the spot using tools like Lightbox. Myspace may be of the mindset that this would do harm to their ad views, but the difference it would make in the user experience would be well worth it and then myspace could take over the world slowly, but do it with style.
With the addition of me, Myspace will have just slightly over 300 employees, none of which are user interface designers (I think about 80% of them are flash game and banner ad designers and the other 20% play golf).
I leave for Beverly Hills in one month (May 1st). Wish me luck... I will miss all of my friends here in Indy.
