House Votes on Marriage Amendment Scheduled for Monday and Tuesday
Tell Your State Representative Why SJR 7 is Wrong for Indiana
The Indiana House of Representatives is set to vote on Senate Joint Resolution 7 (Definition of Marriage). On Monday, March 21st the full House will consider amendments to the resolution. The proposal to amend Indiana’s Constitution to ban same-sex marriage and bar similar legal structures will be eligible for final passage on Tuesday, March 22nd.
Legislative opponents of SJR 7 have prepared a number of proposed amendments to modify the resolution, focusing on the second line of the resolution (This Constitution or any other Indiana law may not be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents of marriage be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups).
To become part of the constitution, it must be passed by two separately-elected legislatures, and then approved by the voters in a referendum. The earliest that could happen is November 2008.
